It takes time to progress. Even then constant investment my not yield results. Often the answer to progress is running more. Much of it is just long slow running. To get better, keep doing it.

The race isn’t the distance you complete, it’s the time it takes to get you point to point. Your watch and strava’s best time for a distance is lying to you. Do it tape to tape, start line to finish line. In a recent 1500m race the second place finisher ran 1517 meters, winner ran 1503m. The paces if adjusted to 1500m would have put 2nd place in first. Take the short st route / the tangents.
Prove it on race day.

Running shoes are temporary, have fun. I buy the bargains and the cheapest color way, but the funnest I can find. I am the one paying and they will be gone in less than 6 months. Cheap out weights style. Buy your trusted shoes the end of a model year when they go on close out instead of the next version.

Running is best enjoyed in so many different ways. Alone, with your friends, racing, exploring, jogging, sprinting, and often. Maybe it’s your favorite 7 mile loop with the 5pm run group. Solo on a weekday morning before work, or the church of the long run. A winter run with a blinking vest, a rainy run with only your thoughts. If you are bored with running, shake it up.

Racing, especially longer distance racing takes the stars to align to get the best results. A long build with good fortune to stay healthy, and sharpened to perform. A race day where the weather doesn’t work against you. A well tested plan. A determined, but flexible mindset to understanding of what you can do on that day. Knowing how hard you can push without breaking, and the courage to execute.

You can’t outrun your inner struggles. Running can help you work through life’s challenges, shape you into someone strong enough to face them. Seriously though, get a therapist. Have a healthy relationship with yourself, and running.

All running is running, but not all running is the same. Like art, if you are doing it, you are. No one can tell you, ‘you aren’t a runner’. That said, a Sunday jog is different than a set of track intervals. I’ve run 20 mile runs which seem like a 10k, and recovery runs I struggled through.

There is a time for rest. You need time away to appreciate the joy, to heal, and to have the strength to resume the hard work.
Rest days and off cycles are important.

Lastly running is just a thing, not an identity. I run, but I am so much more.

[181
173
post-1402","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-fitness","tag-running
["GET
